Oldham Says
Helping a community put the issues that matter to them on the police's agenda, and giving them an accurate picture of the safety of their area.
Oldham Says aims to fulfil the requirements of a number of National Indicators relating to crime and safety, particularly those relating to perceptions of crime, anti-social behaviour, alcohol & drugs (NI 17, 41, 42), understanding of local concerns about safety by local authorities (NI 27), how authorities responded (NI 21) and satisfaction levels with the outcomes (NI 24 & 25).
The site is designed to be as friendly and engaging as possible; it includes a comments system to collect and share the views of local residents. It's full of Local Stories by real residents working to make Oldham a better place to work and live. An In Your Area section provides detailed information on crime stats, local contacts and priorities for your area. It also allows residents to share concerns or even disagree with the priorities using an online form.
As well as promoting the idea of Partners & Communities Together (PACT) meetings and individual consultation events, the “Area Priorities” section is essentially an online version of a physical meeting, where residents submit issues to contribute to the Neighbourhood Policing Team, and to potentially update the area priorities on the website or raise them at future meetings.
There’s an important “sense of place” element to Oldham Says - pages for individual wards, photographs of the local area, opinions from local people and a clickable Google map for browsing interactions by locality.
Local priority outcomes are clearly identified in terms of crime statistics, and in information and updates provided by members of Oldham Partnership, including Greater Manchester Police.
We’re also developing and implementing a social media strategy for Oldham Partnership, to access the widest online audience possible, in an effort to direct to the website local residents concerned about crime and safety in their area, with the aim of stimulating discussion and driving participation.
